TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

LAKE ASPHALT OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO (1978) LIMITED

Lake Asphalt of Trinidad and Tobago (1978) Ltd supplies a variety of asphalt products such as Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA), a number of Bitumen Emulsions, Refinery Bitumen, a range of asphalt based coatings branded as the LASCO range of products and a homogenized composite of TLA and refinery bitumen, locally referred to as TLA Blend.

COMPANY PROFILE
For more than 100 years, Lake Asphalt has been setting the standard in the global asphalt industry. The company exports Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA), a refined form of the naturally occurring asphalt found in the pitch lake in La Brea, to five of the seven continents of the world.

TLA, a premium quality enhancer for refinery bitumen, is used in a number of applications worldwide, including the paving of some of the largest roadways, highways, bridge decks, racetracks and airport runways across the globe.

Apart from TLA, Lake Asphalt manufactures and markets a range of Cationic Bitumen Emulsions produced in its state of the art Bitumen Emulsion Plant. The company is also a distributor of Refinery Bitumen, a range of coatings that use TLA as a base branded as the LASCO Range of products, and a mixture of TLA and Refinery Bitumen known as TLA Blend (AC), all of which are exported locally, regionally and internationally.

Lake Asphalt is continuing its history of innovation through ongoing investment into its Research and Technology capabilities. Today, the company holds over 20 patents, the most significant of which is the patent for Pelletized TLA.

PIONEERS OF PELLETIZATION
Historically, TLA use has been characterized by the need for specialized equipment in its preparation and use. In order to negate the need for such a large investment, Lake Asphalt embarked on an extensive research and development programme with the aim of developing an alternative form of TLA, the result was Pelletization - the transformation of TLA into pellet form.

TLA pellets look nothing like the sticky black substance associated with the material extracted from the Pitch Lake - the pellets are all of a uniform size, approximately 6-9 mm in diameter, rounded and coated with a generally white appearance. - but they deliver all of the same benefits of TLA:

  1. Longer service life (15-20 years)
  2. Reduced maintenance costs
  3. Greater skid resistance
  4. Cost justified at 2.5 times economic benefit of Refinery Bitumen

Like TLA, the use of TLA pellets can result in substantial long-term cost savings due to the product's superior durability, impermeability, and structural stability, which together contribute to its greatly extended service life.
