Delhi Government : Volunteer Programme

Preparing for Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi

VOLUNTEERS CRUCIAL TO SUCCESS OF CWG

By being made the host city for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, Delhi has been provided with a very rare opportunity of showcasing its ancient history and tradition before the world community. Clearly, the city-state has an opportunity to showcase the essence of Indian culture and hospitality.

Towards this end, the Delhi Government has a very important and crucial role to play to ensure that the CWG is successful from every point of view. It is now an active partner in the Volunteer Programme that will involve and engage citizens of Delhi in the process of showcasing the history, tradition, culture and hospitality. The Volunteer Programme will provide a chance to the youth and others in the national capital to present Delhi at its very best. The programme, therefore, envisages to not only leave memorable imprints in the minds of visitors from across the world, but also to forge lasting bonds and friendships with the world’s largest city-state.

As part of its commitments, the Delhi Government will also be handling the Role Specific Training of volunteers who are to be deployed for City Operations. This means that a set of dedicated volunteers will be available at important tourist spots and places of interest in Delhi, at cultural events, tourist information counters, cultural sites, and buildings. These volunteers will be available throughout the duration of the Games

Towards the pursuit of showcasing such excellence, the Delhi Government has fulfilled the commitments entrusted to it, i.e.

 · Provided space to the Volunteer Organizing Committee in the month of December 2009, one month before the original target—January 2010.

 · With the cooperation of premier institutions such as Delhi University, Guru Gobind Singh I.P. University (GGSIP University), Jamia Milia University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi Technological University, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University, National Law University and the National Institute of Technology, the Delhi Government has provided the Organizing Committee of the CWG a list of more than 13,000 volunteer applicants. It is to be recorded that the role played by all these institutions, in particular by the Universities of Delhi, and GGSIP, is indeed very commendable.

 · The Delhi Government has also taken the lead in supporting the Volunteer Training Programme by providing Training Infrastructure and Training Venues to interviewers for the final selection of volunteers for the CWG 2010. This assistance is being provided by the universities in conjunction with the Department of Education of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Apart from the infrastructural support and coordination with various universities, the Delhi Government has supported the Volunteer Training Programme by providing necessary human resources such as nodal officers and support staff.

These volunteers will be available throughout the duration of the Games.
