One of the recommendations of the High Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora (2001) was that the practice of holding Festivals of India be revived. They helped showcase India, and also aided in keeping the diaspora in sync with India’s art, heritage and culture. That practice is yet to be revived by the Government in the manner of the 1980s, but local Indian diaspora groups are taking the initiative in organizing such festivals. One such group organized the India India celebrations in Zurich in August and had over 200,000 attendees. Events like these, along with the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, are crucial in keeping the diaspora’s connect with India alive, especially that of the younger generations. We have a report on the event and an interview with the organizers, Arun Amirtham and Anjum Amirtham.

We have a write-up on the Indian community in the Netherlands that is hosting the PBD Europe in September along with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA). It has been extracted from the highly insightful report of the High Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora and throws light on how both the Indo-Surinamese and NRIs have blended well into the larger Dutch community.

There are interviews with the Secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, K Mohandas, and with Inder Singh who took over as chairman of the GOPIO in August at the organization’s 20th anniversary celebrations in New York.

There are several other features that will be of interest to the Indian diaspora.
