Yesu Persaud is a remarkable man who has this exciting habit of turning anything he touches into a success. Even though he has stayed away from mainstream politics, his contribution to the development of independent Guyana has been immense. At 81, he along with President Bharrat Jagdeo are most known names in the PIO world. So when in late October the University of West Indies at Trinidad and Tobago, conferred an LLD on Yesu Persaud for his entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavours, we decided to carry this cover article on him. His contributions to Guyana have been exceptional, and the string of recognitions long. In August 2008, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Warwick in the U.K. for his exemplary achievements as an entrepreneur. In July 1997 he was appointed chairman of the Caribbean Council for Europe. As the author of this article Leonard Gildarie says, “Yesu’s work, whether on a business, social and political level, will continue to leave an indelible mark on the history of Guyana.”

A feature on how Indian curry has become irresistible for the British palate is in many ways symbolic of India’s growing presence worldwide.
