The world’s greatest Overseas Indian show—Pravasi Bharatiya Divas—set the tone for a busy month for the diaspora. Along with the PBD came smaller, but significant events, like the ones hosted by the GOPIO at New Delhi, and several outside the capital. Going by the level of interest and keenness shown by a very large number of companies in participating at the PBD, it is clear that the Overseas Indian market has gained considerable importance over the years. There are now more real estate, infrastructure, banking, finance, travel, IT and service companies that are bee-lining for a share of this market. The one promising inclusion this time at the PBD was the Overseas Indian Facilitation Centre, a public-private partnership that will aid and focus overseas Indian investments in India and also help Indians to target markets and business assistance worldwide.

Even the Government’s theme of engaging the diaspora in the social development of India was appreciable this time. Health, education, infrastructure, knowledge are areas where the diaspora, including both NRIs and PIOs, can play a vital role. Importantly, these are win-win areas for both the diaspora and India, areas where both stand to gain immensely from the range of opportunities and development possibilities that lie ahead.

We have an interview with the Prime Minister of Mauritius Navinchandra Ramgoolam who was the chief guest at the PBD, and another with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit whose Government partnered the PBD. And a third interview is with GOPIO President Inder Singh.

Apart from this we are now compiling an Overseas Indian data base that will include over 350,000 names from across the world, and preparing for a NRI guidebook, a real estate seminar, and a function to award prominent Indians across the world. We’ll talk about these more elaborately in the forthcoming issues of INDIA EMPIRE.
