SUN, SAND & MAURITIUS
The people of Mauritius have a special place for India in their hearts. Unlike the Indian diaspora in many parts of the world that expects India to accept them as neglected Indians, we in Mauritius have a healthy and mature relationship with India. We realise that India is too big and its rulers are too caught up with their myriad problems to be able to pay attention to the scattered populations of Indians worldwide. However, we accept all offers of economic and cultural exchanges and are always eager to meet and interact with Indians. I think that’s the best policy. Expect nothing, hope for everything.

Since independence in 1968, Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agricultural-based economy to a middle income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial, and tourist sectors. Thanks to its growing economic relationship with India, the country is experiencing a sustained boom that has led to unprecedented prosperity in the country. I hope the trend continues.

While Mauritius is benefitting from trade with India, it is a major contributor to India’s economy too. Mauritius ranks first in respect of FDI inflows to India among all countries with cumulative inflows amounting to $10.98 billion. Top sectors attracting FDI inflows from Mauritius are electrical equipment, telecommunications, fuels, cement and gypsum products and services sector. Of course, the money is being merely re-directed from Mauritius because it is tax haven, but still the fact remains that Mauritius is a big investor in India.

NAZIS ARE BACK
Your Pravasi item about racial attacks on Indians in Germany made chilling reading. Imagine being on the run while working in an alien land. You have no friends, no relatives or colleagues or connected people who can bail you out. What made it even more depressing was the fact that the crowds just watched this macabre dance of violence. Here were three or four harmless Indians being attacked by an unruly mob of over 50 youths, and nobody cares a damn. This is bullshit and it makes me stop believing about the global market place. I really feel that Kipling was right when he wrote: East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet. Call me blinkered but this has become a pattern: Indians being attacked all over the world.

HEALTH PLUS
Your health section is a major reason why I buy your magazine. Apart from Yogi Ashwini’s practical yoga tips to Dr Sharma’s psycho-talk, there is a lot more on beauty and ayurveda that is interesting.
