Born in Guyana—formerly British Guyana—Ashook Ramsaran is third generation of Indian parents who came as indentured laborers from India. He earned his primary and secondary education in Guyana, worked in Guyana as a school teacher and then in the courts before emigrating in 1968 to the US to pursue higher technical education.

Ramsaran was educated in the US (BSEE, MSEE) and worked in US industry as an electronics engineer after graduation. He advanced to become vice-president of engineering before establishing Ramex Inc, his own electronics manufacturing enterprise in Point, New York.

Ramex has been named among the Top 100 Indian Owned Businesses in the US for 10 consecutive years. He is married to Camille (formerly Camille Ramgadoo also of Guyana) and is the father of two sons, Arnold and Gerald, both of whom live in the US. He is an ardent advocate of universal human rights and observance of the rule of law in the Indian diaspora, and collaborates with St. John’s University in New York on a continuing series of seminars and conferences on Indian diasporic issues.

Ramsaran has been honoured as the “Outstanding Immigrant” by New York City Council, and serves as the “Annual Principal For The Day” in the New York Public School System. He is very active in his local New York community civic and religious groups, contributes generously to causes on behalf of the needy, and has written extensively on issues of interest and concern affecting people of Indian origin in the Indian diaspora. He initated and chaired the first “Tracing Our Roots” session at PBD 2005 in Mumbai. Ramsaran actively supported and promoted the recently signed India-US nuclear treaty.
