CHICAGO PLAYING

When Chicago hosted the World of Games, the Punjabi Cultural Society 
put up an impressive display of India’s popular kabbadi sport, which won 
over the audience in the Windy City

Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS) presented the popular Indian sport, kabaddi, recently at the “World of Games” organized by the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Chicago Office of Tourism. The event scheduled at Millennium Park was moved to Washington Cultural centre due to extremely hot weather conditions. 

The games were a tremendous success in the cool and comfortable Chicago Cultural Center. Over 1,500 people attended the event throughout the day and delighted in the variety of international games. Whether they stayed for hours or moments, they left with a memorable experience.

A demonstration of how the game of kabaddi is played was done by the players of “Doaba Club,” and the commentary from the main stage about how to play the game was given by Mohinderjit Singh Saini and Rajinder Singh Mago. Later some bold enthusiasts from the audience participated in learning and matching their speed and strength against the Doaba Club boys. The enthusiasts included a few women too. 

Bhangra aerobics with the participation of the audience was also demonstrated and taught. There were staged demonstrations of a spectrum of games that people play in Chicago and have their roots in countries around the world. The games ranged from the popular Italian pastime, bocce ball to the highly skilled martial arts of Asia and Brazil, American Double Dutch, and many board games. Indo-American Center presented Carrom Board. This event was presented as part of Silk Road Chicago by the Department of Cultural Affairs in cooperation with over 20 community and cultural partners, sponsored by the Chicago Office of Tourism.

The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago is a not-for-profit community organisation devoted to sharing Punjabi culture, language, performing arts, healthier lifestyle, sports, good citizenship and education.
