‘OVERSEAS RECRUITMENT WOES UNDER CONTROL’

PREMJI IN FORBES TECH TITANS LIST

Although precise data is not available, overseas Indian workers are estimated at about 4-5 million, says Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi. During 2005, 5.49 lakh workers went abroad on emigration clearance. Keeping with the rise in immigration, the number of agents has also gone up. And so have the complaints about these recruiters.

There are 1,515 recruiting agents with valid registration involved in recruiting for jobs abroad. Recruitment can also be made directly by the project exporters and foreign employers by obtaining a permit under the Emigration Act from the Protector General of Emigrants.

Ravi said a number of complaints are received from time to time alleging cheating and exploitation of Indian workers by some registered/unregistered-recruiting agents in India and by some foreign employers abroad. However, the number of complaints received is quite small in comparison to the number of Indians working abroad.

Azim Premji, chairman of IT major Wipro, has made it to the list of the world’s 10 richest tech titans compiled by Forbes business magazine. Premji has been placed at the sixth position, with a net worth of $13.3 billion, ahead of Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and founder of German business software major SAP, Hasso Plattner.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates—who has been the world’s richest man for 12 consecutive years—topped the list with $50 billion. Other IT giants in the list include Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen at No. 2 with a net worth valued at $22 billion; Dell founder Michael Dell in the third slot with $17.1 billion; Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison (4) with $16 billion and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (5) with an asset value of $13.6 billion.

Incidentally, Premji is among the select few big guns on the list who remain actively involved in the day-to-day operations of their companies. He is India’s second-richest man after L.N. Mittal. Other Indian IT billionaires include Shiv Nadar of HCL and N.R. Narayana Murthy of Infosys.
