…I walked on. I talked to myself and as I did, suddenly missed the company of Ayone and Ray, both of whom were with us on our earlier kora around
Kailash. Ayone, normally confident and sometimes even brash in his dealings with others, was so affected on catching the first glimpse of the west face of Kailash that he sat quietly on a small rock and wept. Tears streamed down his face as he held the picture of his guru in his hands and said his Gayatri Mantra. This was such an unusual aspect of him that I could only guess at the powerful impact the pilgrimage had on him. |

Ray, who had a rough couple of days earlier coping with HAS, walked slowly in a lightly disoriented and unbalanced manner. When he spoke, he said he missed his father, who had died some years back, and now felt close to him there. He knew he could communicate with his father as though they were in the same world. I recall telling him that I felt the same way about Joy too.
…Morning was pretty as a picture, with yaks and yakpa wandering about the camp. I awoke to find two curious yakpas peeping into my tent. In another few seconds, a third face appeared. The yakpas had unzipped the tent and were intently checking out the person inside, namely myself. I indulged them for a few seconds and then suggested, ‘Doh doh…’ The message was well taken and they wandered off.
The little boy chattered away, hopping from stone to stone, and ran for his life when an older yakpa, his brother, tried to clean his face with a rag. This young man was the one with the habit of intently looking into our tents for many minutes at a time. I was at peace. The little boy ran up to the stream, lay flat on his stomach and licked the running water. He remained me of Pia at one-and-a-half. She would tilt the bowl of puffed rice on to the floor and lick at it like our tow Lhasa Apsos. Pia was joining a new firm on July 1, in faraway Washington. I hoped that she would be content.
