For some years now, the Bollywood Group based in New York has been hosting high-profile events involving India’s film-stars in the United States. More recently, the Group has expanded its operations to the U.A.E. and the Caribbean. The events are always a sell-out not just because they involve the who’s who of India’s film fraternity, but also because they are well planned and meticulously marketed.

In June, the Group staged a Bollywood Awards event at Macoya, Trinidad at the 8,500 capacity Centre of Excellence. The show, expectedly, was a sell out as the Indians among the Trinidadians (the Indians comprise nearly 40 per cent of Trinidad’s 1 million population) flocked the venue. Several Indian stars performed on stage while some from yesteryears were felicitated with lifetime achievement awards. Apart from the celebrities in attendance, the show was attended among others by Trinidad’s Culture Minister Joan Yuille Williams and Indian High Commissioner J.S. Sapra. We bring you a photo-essay on the diaspora event.

Steel tycoon L.N. Mittal’s acquisition of Arcelor has been one of the most talked about subjects in the media world throughout June. The takeover was by no means easy, but Mittal displayed the tenacity of a long-distance runner and held his nerves over five months of protracted negotiations. In those five months, a team of nearly 300, and several bankers were constantly hammering out the nitty-gritty of the deal. It involved frequent flying, but the Indian businessmen came up triumphant in the end.

Apart from taking a look at Steel King Mittal, we’ve also looked at Shashi Tharoor, India’s best bet to get the top job at the United Nations. In the face of competition from other nations it won’t by any means be a walk in the park for Tharoor. As an insider he’s assiduously worked on his candidature for the past five years. Now India is backing him for the job.

A group of young diaspora men and women were in India on a month long trip. Their sojourn was facilitated by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs. The emotional group went back to their countries feeling more Indian than they had ever felt before, and of course promised to return soon. It just shows how our roots will always stick to us, no matter who we are, where we are.
