The Indian cricket team had a nightmarish start to its South African tour. Pummelled into submission by the Springboks, the Indian team capitulated to a 0-4 loss in the five one day matches, with one washed out. The star cricketers showed little spunk while the younger lot appeared a bit fazed. Whatever the reasons for the surrender, cricket pundits, journalists, former cricketers simply couldn’t stop lashing out. They were critical of the way, or the lack of it, in which the Indian team prepared for an important trip. There was no conditioning camp, no real preparations for the fast and bouncy tracks.
In the middle of all this, walked in Sourav Ganguly, deposed skipper, and a man who was much humiliated by his coach, and a section of selectors and media one year ago. Ganguly may be short on technique at times, but there is one thing he has in abundance, grit and will. A combination of these can once again make him the Prince that some commentators choose to call him. He likes a good fight, and the Test series is just the opportunity to prove that he has plenty left in him. It’s another matter how be blends in with coach Greg Chappell’s scheme of things, but as of now, it is not Chappell, but Ganguly, that Indian cricket is looking to for raising its morale.
We also bring to you a collection of photos from the Bollywood Music Awards held in November at the Trump Taj Mahal and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The show was a spectacular success, and organized by the Bollywood Group. As in every such show organized by the group, America’s glitterati turned out in large numbers to attend. Among those awarded at the Trump was singer Michael Bolton.
