SUBROTO
SURFACES ALBEIT BRIEFLY
Missing tycoon Subroto Roy, the chairman of the Rs 50,000
crore Sahara Group, addressed the nation through a video footage
recently. “All’s well with my health,” he
said making a public appearance after about three months.
The 58-year-old high-roller added that there was no political
pressure on the group, and denying rumours of his being HIV
positive said, “I have got an HIV test done and I do
not have AIDS.” Speculation, however, is still on when
the recording of the tape was done. |
TUFF TRUCE
After 10 years, the Maharashtra government wants is seeking
withdrawal of charges against supermodels Madhu Sapre and
Milind Soman, who were booked in an obscenity case. Sapre’s
lawyer Dipesh Mehta said there was no prima facie case against
any of the accused and hence the government wanted to withdraw
charges. A Tuff shoes advertisement featuring a naked Sapre
and Soman, too, in the buff with a python draped around them
had sparked an outcry after it appeared in leading publications
in 1995.

Girija Sharan,
professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad,
has bagged the World Bank's Global Development Marketplace
award. This is for his innovative approach to doubling
agricultural yield despite using only half the required
amount of water. In Kutch, a greenhouse cooled by an
‘earth tube heat exchanger’, Sharan’s
brainchild, is yielding tomatoes and capsicum—commodities
the district had never grown before. This agricultural
engineer's 'Arid Area Greenhouse' project has gained
world recognition, getting Sharan the award from among
2,600 projects that had entered the competition from
38 countries. The award includes a prize money of $1,50,000.
