The late Dr Tonse Madhava Anantha Pai (1898 - 1979), a physician, educationist, banker and philanthropist, was the founder and builder of modern Manipal. He established educational, medical, banking and industrial enterprises of national importance and repute. Manipal has been involved with learning since its inception. The tuition fee for students is fixed on the recommendation of the Committee of Experts appointed in consultation with UGC, taking into account of the various inputs required, recurring and non-recurring expenditure, so as to maintain the high standards in courses and disciplines.

The Twinning Programs, where the student completes the first two years of education at Manipal and then is transferred to the USA, UK or Australian affiliated universities to complete the course, are also extremely popular. The Melaka Manipal Medical College, Melaka, Malaysia was initiated in 1994 with an agreement between the Manipal Group, India and the state government of Melaka, Malaysia. This was the results of bilateral relationships between India and Malaysia, treaty signed by the two prime ministers of the respective countries. The innovate medical education program which is being offered are of world class facilities of these well-established institutions.
The American University of Antigua College of Medicine (AUA) and MU have joined hands to provide one of the best educational experiences a medical student can have. The KMC International Center at Manipal was established to conduct a twinning program with the AUA.
