India’s online population growth fastest

Holy cow! 60% Indians eat meat

India’s online population is growing at the fastest rate in the world, a survey by US Internet firm comScore Networks has said. India’s web users grew by 7.8 per cent to 18.02 million in the three months to June. China witnessed the second-biggest growth rate during the same period at 5.22 per cent. India has also moved up to ninth place in terms of total online population, up one spot from its position three months ago, while the United States is in first place with 153 million web users, the survey found.

As high as 60 per cent of the Indian population eats meat, a survey by the English daily, The Hindu, and CNN IBN television network found. The food habits, however, varied on the basis of region and religion. The survey says while just 2 per cent of Keralites are vegetarian, less than 4 per cent survive on greens in Andhra Pradesh and 8 per cent in Orissa and Tamil Nadu.

The percentage of vegetarian families are higher in northern India, with Rajasthan accounting for 63 per cent vegetarian people, Haryana 62 per cent, Punjab 48 per cent, Gujarat 45 per cent, Madhya Pradesh 35 per cent and Uttar Pradesh 33 per cent. Around 9 per cent are vegetarians but they eat eggs.

Overall, only 31 per cent individuals prefer vegetarian food and 60 per cent others have shown a definite preference for non-vegetarian food. Also, 21 per cent Indian families are complete vegetarians while 44 per cent prefer non-vegetarian food.

   

India to train American docs

PM earns 2,000 times less than Sachin

Washington University has signed an MoU with Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu)-based Ganga Medical Centre and Hospitals for provide training in hand and reconstructive microsurgery to American doctors. Under the agreement, the American doctors would undergo supervised training and would be exposed to clinical and didactic experience in advanced hand and reconstructive microsurgery, including replantation surgery.

Dr S. Raja Sabapathy, director and head (plastic, hand and reconstructive micro surgery department) would assume educational and supervisory responsibility for training, recognised by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education and Residency Review Committee. “This is the first time a US university is entering into such an agreement,” Sabapathy said. He said under the agreement there would be regular flow of American doctors in future, to get trained in the hospital.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earns almost 2,000 times less than cricket star Sachin Tendulkar in one minute. Singh, who handles the nation’s affairs earns only 57 paise per minute, while Sachin earns Rs 1,163 per minute, according to Saamna, the mouthpiece of the Maharashtra-based Shiv Sena.

Saamna said President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam earned Rs 1.14 per minute, almost 1,000 times less Tendulkar, but an improvement on what Singh takes home. While the PM earns Rs 3,60,000 a year, the President earns Rs 6,00,000.

A list of top earners compared by the paper shows industrialist and Reliance Group Chairman Mukesh Ambani earning Rs 413 per minute. Ambani received Rs 21.72 crore last year. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan earned Rs 361 per minute, three times less than Tendulkar. As per Saamna, Sachin has signed a Rs 180 crore per annum deal with an ad agency. He also receives Rs 2,35,000 for a Test and Rs 2,50,000 for a one-day match.
