PROJECT ON ‘SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE’ TO BEGIN SHORTLY |
Leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul said the project work for setting up a ‘School of Excellence’ of manufacturing and material sciences at Punjab Technical University would begin shortly. “The blueprint is ready, money is lying in my charitable fund and work will begin in the next couple of weeks,” the chairman of the UK-based Caparo Group told reporters after paying a visit to the project site. Asked whether it would have any foreign tie-up, he said: “I am having talks with some foreign universities but only to get an idea on how to impart education of international standards.” He also ruled out engaging faculty from abroad. “These are normal things that everybody starts getting into but in the end it is only the question of price—what price the buyer wants to pay, what price shareholder wants,” he said.

NEW PROJECT TO FACILITATE NRIS IN UK
|
The British government has launched a project to educate and facilitate Non-Resident Indians to remit funds home at cheaper rates. Deputy High Commissioner Ranjan Mathai launched a leaflet in the House of Commons, which contains information on the choices of money transfer products and services available for Indians to send home money.
India received a staggering $22 billion through NRI remittances last year, more than any other country in the world, a World Bank report has said. McGurk said the “Sending Money Home” project aimed to provide comparable, easily accessible information on the products and services available.
“Both the website and leaflet give clear, objective information on UK banks and money transfer operators who offer services to India; their costs, exchange rates, speed of transfer and security,” she said.

HOLI CELEBRATIONS |
Holi—the festival of colours—is one of the largely celebrated festivals in India and also the most colourful. It celebrates the arrival of spring; it’s a celebration of joy and hope. Countless Bollywood movies have brought this festival on screen and made it famous globally.
CRY—Child Relief & You, an Indian charity for children organized the Holi festivities on March 12 at the Metropolis Bar and Grill in London.
But there was more than song, dance and colours at the celebrations. The event, planned and executed by volunteers from all walks, helped raised funds for children’s projects in India. CRY raised nearly £3500 from this event. Over 150 attended this celebration.
“Interestingly, the participants were of a mix profile—from Indians to British Asians and even British were present,” says Nina Munshi, CRY spokesperson in London. |
