BILATERAL RELATIONS - HONDURAS

JULY 2024

Honduras, strategically positioned between Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, holds pivotal significance due to its access to the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, making it a regional trade hub. India and Honduras enjoy cordial and friendly relations with several Ministerial level visits in 2023. Honduras has been consistently supporting India at the multilateral stage over the years. India's expertise in pharmaceuticals, information technology, and infrastructure development presents valuable opportunities for collaboration. India's development cooperation has been robust with Honduras. As Honduras was facing COVID-19 crisis, the Government of India donated essential medicines and PPEs Honduras. Similarly, earlier, during many challenging times, the Government of India had come forward with monetary and material support like India donating medicines and medical supplies to Honduras in 1998 and gave monetary support in the times of natural disasters like in October 2005. As part of India's offer to set up the Centre of Excellence in Education in Information Technology (CEEIT) in SICA countries, the centre was set up and handed over to the Honduran National Autonomous University in Tegucigalpa and training was provided by NIIT during 2008-2011. So far, more than 20,000 students have been trained in the Center. Bilateral trade between India and Honduras has shown modest figures, estimated at approximately $288.77 million in 2023. Indian businesses seeking new markets in Central America find potential in Honduras. Recently the Government of Honduras has shown its interest in collaborating with India to execute various infrastructure projects in Honduras, including the construction of a metro line. Both nations recognize the potential for further diversification and expansion of trade relations. The geographical distance between the two countries and the limited awareness about each other's cultures and business opportunities act as barriers to closer cooperation. Honduras offers potential for Indian businesses seeking new markets in Central America. India and Honduras are witnessing rapid growth in cultural relations and growing popularity of Indian culture in Honduras.

India's engagement with Central American countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras exemplifies the principle of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" - the world is one family. Through proactive diplomacy, economic partnerships, and cultural exchanges, India has strengthened its ties with these nations, fostering a deeper understanding and mutual respect. The enhancement of trade relations, marked by significant investments and collaborative projects in infrastructure, technology, and healthcare, underscores India's commitment to contributing to the region's development and prosperity. As India continues to expand its footprint in Central America, the future holds promising opportunities for further cooperation and shared growth, reinforcing the bonds of friendship and solidarity across the continents.
