BILATERAL RELATIONS - EL SALVADOR

JULY 2024

El Salvador, situated south of Guatemala, has not been immune to political unrest and a high crime rate, similar to its neighbors. However, the country appears to be on a positive trajectory under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, who has recently assumed his second consecutive term in office. President Nayib Bukele's administration has taken bold steps to combat crime, implementing stringent measures to restore law and order. His efforts to eliminate crime and corruption have been pivotal in steering the country towards economic recovery and stability.

Despite the challenging geopolitical environment, India has managed to navigate through rough seas by proactively fostering strong bilateral relations with El Salvador. These efforts are driven by shared aspirations for growth, development, and stability, allowing India to strengthen its strategic foothold in the region. The two nations have engaged in a series of high-level visits and diplomatic engagements, which have played a crucial role in attracting Indian companies and investors to this region of the Western Hemisphere. Lakshmi Capital has also embarked on transformative initiatives by signing MoUs to invest approx. USD 3.5 billion in various infrastructural projects. The potential for further expansion and diversification of India-El Salvador relations is immense. Both countries can explore new areas of cooperation, such as 5G technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and science and technology. El Salvador's membership in the International Solar Alliance marks a significant step towards embracing renewable energy and addressing climate change challenges. This alignment with India's renewable energy initiatives opens new avenues for collaboration in sustainable development.
