  • Dr Vijay Dhasmana, Vice Chancellor, Swami Rama Himalayan University

The Swami Rama Himalayan University has been a blessing for the people of Uttarakhand, and beyond. You’ve been associated with SRHU for a very long time. Could you describe its journey over the last two decades and more?

Prompted by your question, when I look back, the journey thus far, has been quite exciting, fascinating and enriching.

This organization is the brain-child of beloved Gurudev H.H. Dr. Swami Rama whose entire life was dedicated to selfless service for humanity. Way back in 1968, he had corresponded with one of his disciples in Kanpur describing the hospital, his vision and mission. In 1989, Gurudev founded the Himalayan Institute Himalayan Trust (HIHT). At the very beginning, the organization started rural development activities by providing door-to-door health care facilities to the people of Garhwal mountains. A 300-bed multispecialty Himalayan Hospital began functioning in 1994. In 1995, the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), the first private Medical college of Uttarakhand (then Uttar Pradesh), was established. Early 1996, the Nursing Diploma program was introduced.

On 13th November, 1996 Gurudev departed for his heavenly abode. Interestingly, not only do I strongly believe, I have also experienced that nothing moves in SRHU campus without his blessings, even now.

Thus far, the journey has been very fascinating. We have faced many ups and downs but have always been able to manage and rise above these situations with the blessings of beloved Gurudev.
