Is tourism from India to Tunisia on the rise, and if so, which are the major tourist destinations?
Tourism is a very important sector, not only for business but mostly for enhancing people to people contact. I think over 15 million Indian tourists are travelling all around the world. We are working to attract Indian tourists to modern Tunisia, ancient Carthage. In October 2017, we waived visa formalities for Indians tourists. Today all they need to visit Tunisia is a valid passport, return ticket and hotel reservation. Tunisia has a very rich civilization of over 5,000 years old. Indians who belong to one of the oldest civilization in the World are very curious about other traditions, civilization, culture. Likewise, Tunisians dream of coming to India to discover incredible India. There is so much that Tunisian and Indian can learn from each other through Tourism.
Will Tunisia seeking Indian support to build its Institutions and capacity building including straitening of democracy?
India support to Tunisia goes back to the early fifties. India firm support for Tunisia’s sovereignty was fervent and constant before and after our independence from colonial rule in 1956. Moreover, in November 1952, the Late Minister and diplomate Taieb Slim was welcome in New Delhi as the representative of the Tunisian movement for independence.
Today, being the largest democracy in the World, India can be of great support to Tunisia in further strengthening our democratic Institutions and enhancing our capacity building. Tunisia which is an emerging democracy can, certainly, benefit from India democratic experience through exchanges of knowledge, technical support and management expertise.
How are India and Tunisia planning to combat terror and radicalism?
Terrorism, radicalism and extremism are today a major threat to our people, our societies, global peace, and to our shared values of democracy. Like India, Tunisia has steadfastly maintained “zero tolerance” to terrorism and strongly condemns terror and violence in all its forms and manifestations in line with its national policy and its international commitments.
