“Our bilateral relations are at their peak”

H.E. Mr Jorge Juan Castaneda Mendez, Ambassador of Peru to India, responded to questions from India Empire Magazine...

On the other hand, the main exports to India from Peru are gold, copper ore and concentrates, phosphates of calcium, zinc and lead minerals, fish flour, synthetic cables, fresh grapes etc. It must be highlighted that bilateral trade has increased tenfold in the last decade from US$190 million in 2005 to more than US$ 1696 in 2016.

Until the April month of this year, the exchange balance (X + I) between Peru and India has increased by almost 45 percent. The volume of import of Indian Products into Peru has declined by almost 11 percent and Peruvian exports have doubled. It is noteworthy that in the last three years the balance of trade between Peru and India shows a surplus in Peruvian exports to India of US$ 254 million, which indicates that Peru has a positive trade relationship with India. Exports from the mining sector of Peru to India grew by 189 percent, i.e., almost 98.4 percent of total exports. The main products that enabled this growth were gold and copper.

In 2017, Peru exported to India the shipments of fishmeal from the fishing sector. Export statistics for the first half of 2017 show a growth of 96 percent in comparison to the same period in 2016, this results mainly due to the escalation in coffee exports to the Indian market. It should be noted that coffee exported to India is used by the instant coffee industry.

Peru is the second largest exporter of table grapes to India, only after the United States of America. Exports of non-traditional products from the agricultural sector are the ones that have grown most during this period. Table grape exports grew by almost 51 percent and we managed to export about US$ 1.5 million worth of cocoa beans which is 70 percent more than the last year.
