Expanding Economic Engagement

India and Morocco have agreed to deepen economic cooperation by expanding market access, diversifying bilateral trade, and encouraging investment, with fertilizers, renewable energy, and pharmaceuticals emerging as key areas for future collaboration.

New Delhi: India and Morocco concluded the seventh session of their Joint Commission Meeting, agreeing to pursue actionable measures to expand market access, diversify the trade basket, and boost investments. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Mr Jitin Prasada, who co-chaired the meeting with Morocco’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade Mr Omar Hejira, described the discussions as a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral economic ties. The two sides also signed the agreed minutes at the conclusion of the meeting.

The discussions provided an opportunity to review existing areas of economic and commercial cooperation and identify measures to broaden and consolidate engagement between the two countries. Key areas included trade and market access, fertiliser production and supply, investment, industrial cooperation, customs, agriculture and food safety, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, energy and mining, renewable energy, digital transformation, transport and logistics, AYUSH, tourism, education, and skills.

Mr Prasada, who is also Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, said India and Morocco should now look toward deepening strategic cooperation in sectors with strong potential for future growth. He specifically highlighted fertilisers, renewable energy, and pharmaceuticals as vital areas in which the two countries could expand their partnership.

The Joint Commission meeting was held during Mr Prasada’s official visit to Morocco from August 24–25. The engagement builds on longstanding bilateral relations and the significant potential for expanding commercial and investment ties. Bilateral merchandise trade between India and Morocco stood at around US$ 4 billion in 2025, providing a substantial base for further economic engagement.
