India-Africa Strategic Reset
India Africa Summit extremely important for charting new course of cooperation: South African Envoy
New Delhi: The upcoming India-Africa Summit is set to mark a pivotal moment in redefining cooperation between the two regions, with South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, H.E. Anil Sooklal, describing it as a “coming-of-age” platform that will chart a new course for engagement across multiple strategic domains. Reflecting on the evolution of ties, he pointed to longstanding historical connections and the institutional foundation laid by earlier summits in 2008, 2011 and 2015, noting that both India and Africa now occupy significantly transformed economic and geopolitical positions.
The summit, scheduled for May, is expected to focus on global governance and reform of multilateral institutions including the United Nations, the Security Council, the Bretton Woods institutions and the World Trade Organisation, alongside shared security challenges such as terrorism. High Commissioner Sooklal emphasised that development cooperation will remain central, particularly in education and skills, where India has already extended more than 85,000 scholarships and training programmes, building on earlier commitments and reinforcing its role in capacity building across the continent.
He highlighted healthcare, agriculture, digital infrastructure and industrialisation as key areas of convergence, noting India’s leadership in pharmaceuticals and technology and Africa’s vast potential in arable land and mineral resources. With Africa seeking to accelerate growth and bridge infrastructure gaps, and India emerging as a leading development partner, the summit is expected to consolidate collaboration across sectors while laying out a forward-looking roadmap. The fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, to be held on May 31, 2026, in New Delhi, will bring together leaders from across the continent to strengthen partnerships and expand cooperation in line with shared aspirations.
