New Delhi: The South African Consul in India marked 32 years of South Africa’s freedom, coinciding with 30 years of its Constitution, at a commemorative gathering in Mumbai on April 27, blending reflection with forward-looking engagement across diplomatic, economic, and cultural fronts.

The Consul General of South Africa in Mumbai, Mr Gideon Labane, described the event as a vital public diplomacy platform through which South Africa reinforces its presence and priorities, situating the occasion within the broader canvas of bilateral relations with India while underscoring its parallel focus on trade and investment promotion as key drivers of sustained engagement.

Addressing questions on the trajectory of India-South Africa relations, the Consul General observed that ties are strengthening appreciably, particularly in political engagement and investment flows, noting the presence of more than 100 Indian companies invested in South Africa alongside a growing footprint of South African enterprises in India, even as he expressed a clear desire to see greater South African investment entering the Indian market.

He further emphasised that the relationship continues to deepen across multiple dimensions, including politics, trade, cricket, culture, and cinema, reflecting a layered and evolving partnership that extends beyond conventional diplomacy into people-to-people and cultural exchanges that lend it both resilience and warmth.

He added that South Africa appreciates the initiatives undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly his sustained interest in the African continent, observing that India’s expanding diplomatic footprint across Africa, including the opening of new embassies, has not gone unnoticed and contributes positively to continental engagement.

Turning to upcoming engagements, Mr Labane pointed to the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for mid-May, expressing hope that South Africa’s minister would be present in India for the deliberations, while also referring to the anticipated India-Africa summit at the head-of-state level, where representation from South Africa is expected either through the head of state or an official delegate.

“The relationship between India and South Africa is equal, anchored in mutual respect, and poised for stronger growth.”

Mr Labane underlined that discussions continue actively across bilateral and multilateral platforms, reiterating that the India-South Africa partnership rests on equality and mutual respect, and voicing confidence that the relationship will continue to strengthen in the years ahead through sustained dialogue and cooperation.

Commenting on global developments, he noted with concern that ongoing regional tensions are affecting countries worldwide, particularly through disruptions in oil supply chains that are contributing to inflationary pressures and rising prices, thereby impacting economies far beyond the immediate conflict zones.
