Indian Arrival Memorial Monument

On November 21, 2024, PM Modi was greeted at the memorial by Ashook Ramsaran (President of the Indian Diaspora Council International) and his grandson Jaden Ramsaran of the USA, and they held an interactive discussion on the history and significance of the memorial.

Ashook Ramsaran was instrumental in the design, obtaining funding from the Government of India, writing the inscription and unveiling of IAMM in 2013, the 175th anniversary of the first arrivals of 396 Indian indentured laborers aboard the Whitby which sailed from Kolkata and arrived in then British Guiana in 1838.

The IAMM in Guyana is a replica of the Kolkata Memorial unveiled in 2011 in Kidderpore Demerara Depot on the bank of the Hooghly River at the location where ships with indentured laborers left for British Guiana and other British former colonies from 1834 through 1917.
