After generations of being at the lower end of the economic ladder, the PIOs in the last two to three decades are making their way to the top in business. For the first time now, a PIO owns a distillery in Guadeloupe, hitherto monopolized by the colonial rulers. Many are well positioned in business, real estate, agriculture and tourism. The president of the real estate federation was also GIO’s first president in Guadeloupe.

Ms Ramoutar seeks the assistance of the Puducherry Government in organizing a festival celebrating 170 years of the arrival of the first Indian in Guadeloupe. On her part, she plans to bring a delegation of 15 persons to the PBD in January 2025 that will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that matters related to the issuance of PIO cards in Guadeloupe and neighboring Martinique are being looked into by the Indian Government, there have been two visits by the Indian Ambassador in Paris to the two French Caribbean islands. Indeed, after years of being forgotten and neglected, things appear to be moving ahead positively between India and Guadeloupe.
