The Competitive Edge

By Asoke K. Laha

The potential of AI in education is not just some futuristic concept – it is already reshaping the landscape. The use of Artificial Intelligence is growing and its application in education is mind-boggling. AI provides disruptive techniques to customize the experience of different learning groups, and teachers. Between 2018 and now, AI applications in education in the US have grown close to 50% and are set to grow further.  As someone who has spent decades in leadership, navigating industries through technological revolutions, I can confidently say that AI represents one of the most significant opportunities for the education sector today.

We are not talking about replacing teachers or automating processes for efficiency. Instead, AI’s real power lies in its ability to augment human capability, making education more accessible, personalized, and impactful.

Tools like augmented intelligence, autonomous AI, and assisted intelligence can help a student learn anytime, anywhere without human assistance. Such systems help mostly underprivileged students, who do not have the assistance of a battery of well-qualified teachers and in-campus labs and tutorials. By such self-study methods, students can power their reasoning and skills for innovation. Used positively, that can nurture inquisitiveness and a spirit of adventure among them.

Personalized Learning – A Strategic Differentiator

For decades, education systems have relied on standardized models, but as we know, a one-size-fits-all approach rarely leads to optimal outcomes. This is where AI comes into the picture by creating hyper-personalized learning experiences. Take, for instance, adaptive learning platforms, which analyze student performance in real-time, adjusting lesson plans to suit individual needs. This is no longer about tracking grades and performance metrics – AI can go deeper, mapping cognitive strengths, identifying gaps, and offering tailored pathways for each student.

From a business standpoint, this level of personalization is not just a “nice-to-have;’ it’s a competitive advantage. By this I mean that institutions that adopt AI-driven personalization will set themselves apart in an increasingly competitive education market. In higher education, universities that deploy AI to support students throughout their academic journey will see higher retention rates, better engagement, and more meaningful education outcomes.

Closing the Gap – AI as the Equalizer in Education

We cannot overlook AI’s potential to democratize access in quality education. In regions where schools might be under-resourced or where specialized teachers are scarce, AI can help close this gap. Intelligent tutoring systems, available around the clock, provide on-demand support for students, especially in subjects like math and science where finding qualified tutors is a challenge. AI systems like this do not get tired, do not have limited office hours, and are available at scale.

For educational institutions looking to expand their reach and impact, this is a game changer. The ability to deliver high-quality education opens doors for a new generation of learners. In my opinion, this is where AI becomes not just a tool, but a force for social good.

Redefining the Role of Educators

AI will not, and should not, replace educators – but it will redefine their roles. The administrative burden that has long weighed down teaching staff cannot be streamlined with AI. Grading, data entry, and even student attendance tracking can be automated, allowing educators to focus their time and energy on what truly matters: student engagement, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving.

However, the real potential lies in how AI can empower teachers to become better facilitators of knowledge. AI-driven data analytics offer insights into individual student progress, revealing patterns that teachers may otherwise miss. This transforms teaching into a more informed, strategic role, where data augments intuition and experience, helping educators make more informed decisions.

The Competitive Future of Lifelong Learning

As we move into an era where knowledge becomes obsolete faster than ever before, AI plays a critical role in reshaping lifelong learning. Professionals are no longer bound by the traditional four-year university model. Instead, AI-driven platforms are emerging to offer continuous education tailored to the evolving needs of the workforce.

By leveraging AI, universities, corporate training programs, and online platforms can offer more relevant, adaptive content that keeps professionals at the cutting edge of their industries. Institutions that embrace this model will stand out in a crowded market, securing a competitive advantage not only for themselves but for their learners as well.

In conclusion, AI is more than a tool; it’s a strategic enabler for education. Institutions that invest in AI technologies today are not only transforming how students learn but are also positioning themselves to scale and innovate effectively. From personalized learning to scalable models, the ability to implement AI across educational settings provides a clear competitive edge—one that ensures success in an increasingly complex global landscape.
