INDIA AND COSTA RICA

Celebrating 202 Years of Independence and 53 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Cultural and academic cooperation:

India and Costa Rica share a deep and diverse cultural relationship that has flourished over the years. This cultural exchange has been marked by a mutual appreciation for each other’s traditions, values, and heritage. It began as early as the 1960s when Prof Hilda Chen Apuy, supported by a UNESCO scholarship, formally introduced in 1968 the study of Indian history, philosophy, and Sanskrit at the University of Costa Rica. This academic collaboration laid the foundation for a broader understanding of India’s rich cultural tapestry in Costa Rica.

Cultural exchanges and visits have played a key role in strengthening cultural ties. The visit of Sanskrit scholar Roberto Morales in February 2023, during which he lectured on Sanskrit literature and participated in a cultural exchange, exemplifies the ongoing interest in India’s rich cultural heritage and the desire to foster deeper connections. In addition, art and literature have also been avenues for cultural fusion. The visit of artist Raudyn Alfaro and his painting exhibition, “Costa Rican-scented coffee,” served as a platform for the convergence of artistic traditions from both countries, creating a unique cultural experience involving Indian art students from different backgrounds. In the area of education, the partnership extends to scholarships for Costa Rican students to study at various prestigious Indian universities. Every year, a growing number of Indian students have the opportunity to study at the United Nations-mandated University of Peace in Costa Rica. This exchange of students and experts underscores the multifaceted nature of cooperation between India and Costa Rica. Yoga, a cornerstone of India’s cultural heritage, has become very popular in Costa Rica.

Indian Diaspora in Costa Rica and Costa Rican in India:

With over 1,000 Indians residing in Costa Rica, this community plays an essential role in fostering connections between the two nations. One notable aspect of the Indian diaspora is the active participation of the Costa Rica Indian Association (CRIA), established in 2010, that serves as a central hub for the Indian community in the country. CRIA plays a pivotal role in organizing a wide range of social and cultural programs that help maintain and celebrate Indian traditions, festivals, and customs. These events not only provide a sense of belonging for the Indian diaspora but also offer opportunities for cultural exchange and engagement with the broader Costa Rican society. Additionally, CRIA is actively involved in trade promotion activities, contributing to economic ties between the two countries.
