ACING THE LOTTERY BUSINESS

In the world of lottery business, Ashwani Khurana arrived like a breath of cool, fresh air. He was a cut above the regular lottery operators, not many in the trade spoke with the same flair and authority as he did. He could articulate the views of the industry with clarity and calm. He paid his considerable taxes on time. His lotteries were clean, unlike those run by some others where there were allegations of fixing to benefit kith and kin. K & Co., his firm, became the largest lottery company in India, promoting the very successful Sikkim Lotteries that changed the economic fortunes of many. All this won him the respect of peers and regulators, but unsurprisingly, it also earned him a fair bit of jealousy.
