The referendum split British celebrities vertically. Soccer legend David Beckham and his wife announced their support for remaining within the EU, as did the acclaimed singer Elton John. Beckham said, “for our children we should be facing the problems of the world together, and not alone.” J.K. Rowling of the Harry Potter books expressed concern that “racists” were directing part of the Leave campaign. “How can a retreat into selfish and insecure individualism be the right response when Europe faces genuine threats, when the bonds that tie us are so powerful, when we have so far together?” Daniel Craig, the actor who turned down an offer in excess of 68 million pounds (Rs 604 crore) to appear in two more James Bond movies wore a t-shirt with the words “No man is an island. No country by itself.”

The ones who wanted out included the decorated cine-star Michael Caine who said that “unless there are some extremely significant changes, we should get out.” Model-turned-actor Elizabeth Hurley’s comments resembled more of a movie script: “If it means we can go back to using decent light bulbs and choose high-powered hair dryers and vacuum cleaners if we so wish, I’m joing Brexit for sure.” Among others who supported Leave was England’s star cricketer from yesteryears, Ian Botham.
