This 20-something has already done what many may
only be planning. She has become the most popular face on Indian television
today as Tulsi Virani in the mother of all saas bahu shows, Kyunki Saas Bhi
Kabhi Bahu Thi. Smriti Malhotra Irani was born and brought up in Delhi and moved
to Mumbai when showbiz entered her mind.
She was never interested in a college education. So she decided to take up a
correspondence course for graduation, concentrating on helping her father's
business, on entering the Femina Miss India contest and such like. She entered
the Miss India contest at the age of 18 and made it among the final contestants.
It was a life of struggle for some time after that. She took up a counter job at
McDonalds serving burgers, mopping the floors and cleaning tables. After some
delay she did a black and white commercial for Whisper. Shrey Guleri of Nirja
Guleri Production then approached her to anchor |
Ooh La La for Star Plus.
It
was after this show that Shobhna Kapoor of
Balaji Telefilms signed her for Kavita and Kyunki… that changed the girl's life
forever. Ever since, her character has grown with fellow actors walking out of
the show fearing an ageing image. But Smriti has devotedly stuck to the role
playing mother to actors her age.
Smriti's latest jig is politics and she was nominated by the BJP for the 2004
elections from Chandni Chowk in Delhi. But her Swadeshi Bahu magic didn't work.
Her recent faux pas against Narendra Modi was avoidable, but what's some action
without some tadka.
