La Reunion that belongs to France, and Mauritius are neighbouring islands in the southern Indian Ocean. While Mauritius has been a traditional destination for Indian tourists, especially the honeymooning kinds, Reunion is its lesser known cousin, just 150 km away. Promotional efforts are now being made by Reunion Island, along with Mauritius, to sell the destinations as part of the Vanilla Islands marketing plan to boost the region’s tourism industry. The Vanilla Islands in the Indian Ocean include Mauritius, Reunion, Madagascar and Seychelles. Tihar Jail, one of Asia’s largest prisons, is undergoing a transformation insofar as its inmates are concerned. We’ve gone inside this very high-security jail to understand how the new changes are benefitting inmates. This is a prison that believes in reforms and corrections over mere punishment. Time in prison has become a time for reflection and self-introspection, a time to educate oneself, meditate, listen to music, and a time to serve society by involvement in various factories. At the helm of the reforms is Mr Neeraj Kumar, Director General (Prisons), with whom we have a refreshing interview.
