Empire Feature: Abahayam

Shooting Star

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

That was what Doris Day famously crooned in the Man Who Knew Too Much, a movie that stands the test of time.

But that is not what an astrologer like G Suresh will agree with. For he likes to see the future, and tells us about it. For that purpose he’s set up Abahayam, a Sanskrit word for shelter. The word is comforting, so are the experiences of those who interact with this astrologer based in Kuala Lumpur.

He put in some hard work, studying Vedic astrology in Kerala for 11 years. He has been approached by many, including people in politics, celebrities and media persons. Almost everyone who approaches him wishes to know more about the future, and Suresh likes to tell.

Though Suresh maintains that destiny is immutable and fixed, he believes that to be forearmed is to be forewarned. As he says, though the weather is predictable to some extent, it is beyond man’s control. "Astrology arms us with information so we may be prepared for future events – like an advice to carry an umbrella before the rains," he says.

He maintains that his trade is nothing if not scientific, as the influence of the planets can be observed through historical records and experience. Vedic astrology is the instructional element of the Rig Veda and an extant form of ancient astrology still in practice today.

Abahayam has been initiated with an idea to develop systems to popularize scientific astrology. It plans to provide accurate prediction services, scientific awareness and technology adoption programmes of this ancient science.

With his swelling audience and his ability to look into the future of so many, Suresh is certainly the man who knows much.
