Born in Sanghol, near Chandigarh in India, Diljit Singh Rana arrived in Northern Ireland in 1966. He established Andras House, a property development and hospitality management company which today employs over 300 people. In 2004, he was made life peer as Baron Rana of Malone in the county of Antrim.

Lord Rana remains a leading figure in the Indian community in Northern Ireland, and is involved with the overseas Indian community in a big way. He promotes business links between India and Northern Ireland and has been elected president of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce. In 2004, he was named India’s honorary consul in Belfast.

In 1992 he began sponsorship of the Rana Bursary Award for the School of Architecture, Queen's University Belfast. Four years later, Lord Rana established the Rana Charitable Trust to support local charities and arrange cultural events with the aim of promoting better understanding between different cultures. 

Lord Rana has been awarded the MBE for his contribution to the economic regeneration of Belfast through the development of hotels, restaurants and modern office accommodation. He has set up a charitable trust of Rs 50 million for a school and a college in Sanghol. project was inaugurated by former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam.

In 2005, Lord Rana was given the NRI of the Year award and the following year, GOPIO Award.
