The Bharatvanshi Gaurav Samman is awarded to a diaspora figure who excels in serving the NRI-PIO community worldwide. Who will win it this year?

The Bharatvanshi Gaurav Samman is one of the leading awards that honour the Indian diaspora. Awarded by the Antar-Rashtriya Sahayog Nyas every year, it has acknowledged some of the leading Pravasi figures worldwide.

Nominations are invited for the Bharatvanshi Gaurav Samman -2007 from eminent Indian diaspora personalities. At a meeting of the Nyas' board of trustees held on 20 May, 2008 in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Shri J.C. Sharma, the newly elected president of the Nyas, it was decided nominations along with detailed bio-data of the nominees are to reach the Nyas Office at 6-M, Bhagat Singh Market, New Delhi-110001 by 30 September, 2008.

The Nyas has already honoured Shri Ranjith Ramnarain of South Africa in 2005, Shri Satnarayan Maharaj of Trinidad & Tobago in the year 2006 and Dr Thomas Abraham of the United States in January 2008 in New Delhi for their contributions to the diaspora. The award carries Rs 100,000 in cash, a citation, a plaque and a shawl.

The Antar-Rashtriya Sahayog Nyas (literally, trust for international co-operation) was created with the objective of maintaining close contacts with the Indian diaspora and to acknowledge and appreciate their achievements by publicly honouring at least one person every year to be selected for excellence.

In the year 2003, a high-level committee, comprising people of eminence, who have themselves excelled in a similar cause has been constituted to select and honour one person each year for making an outstanding contribution towards fostering a better understanding abroad of India and/or for extending support to India's causes, concerns and interests internationally and/or for making a significant contribution in service of the Indian diaspora.

Prominent members of the selection committee are Aneroodh Jagnauth, president of Mauritius, Shri Mahendra Choudhry, finance minister of Fiji, Shri Basdeo Pandey, former prime minister of Trinidad & Tobago, Dr Ved P. Nanda, pro-vice chancellor, Denver University, US, Shri Subhash Chandra, chairman & managing director Zee Telefilms, and Shri R.P.N. Singh, chairman, S.S.R. Medical College, Mauritius.
