In late May and early June, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi led a delegation to the Caribbean, consisting mainly of officials from his own Ministry and the Ministry of External Affairs. The trip to the Caribbean, coinciding with the Indian Arrival Day celebrations, was impactful and promising, especially considering that people of Indian origin have felt marginalized in some countries. We take a look at the trip, mostly through pictures. Even the Global Organization for People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) timed its meets in the Caribbean to coincide with the visit of Minister Ravi.

It also happened to be the first ever official visit to the Caribbean by a Union Minister from India. Rather surprising since India has had cricketing ties with the West Indies for over 50 years, and PIOs outnumber the rest of the ethnic groups in some of the Caribbean countries.

This issue also contains a write-up on M. P. S. Kohli, wanted for crimes in England, but who, after being held guilty by a trial court in India, is fighting against his extradition.

We are also carrying the analysis of a poll conducted on our website www.indiaempire.com last month. It relates mainly to the efficacy of the GOPIO. Significantly, a majority of those who took the poll from countries around the world also want the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to be held earlier, preferably in the month of December (instead of January).
