Tired of pizzas from the Domino’s and Pizza Hut factories? Try this new johnny from America? Plus some wines tips

EATING OUT

Add another number to your delivery list — there’s a new ‘Papa John’ pizza chain in town
The latest pizza chain has come in several years after Pizza Hut and Domino’s have bitten off huge chunks of the market. Papa John is an American chain and they like to boast that they use imported flour for the base and imported tomato sauce. Oh yes, their jalapeno peppers are imported too. As if local was yokel.

The good news is that there’s a lot more on the menu than pizzas Their frilled chicken salad is as good as it gets in a chain restaurant, where a certain amount of short-cut is par for the course. A generous helping of moist, succulent grilled chicken rubbed with fragrant dried herbs, sliced cucumbers, tomato wedges, lettuce and juliennes of red cabbage made for a healthy start to a meal. Jalapeno snackers and potato wedges are fried starters don’t think of the former as being piquant in spite of the name they seem to be made with western tastes in mind. Mushroom magic is another healthy, fairly low-calorie option that is quite tasty.

The most intriguing starters, however, are the three flavours of bread sticks that are made out of pizza dough and baked in the oven. Eaten with garlic dip, they are addictive. Papa John has six types of dips, that seem specially formulated for the Indian palate. The mint dip had an unpleasant chemical flavour, and the tomato dip shares exactly the same love-it-or-hate-it taste as that on the pizza topping.

WINES FOR SUMMER

Summer drinking requires a different approach. Lighter, fresher drinks take over from serious, highly pedigreed wines and spirits. Not only are they more refreshing, they’re also a better match for fuss-free summer cooking. Plus we match wines to go with today’s dishes.

Chapel Down Bacchus
Chapel down is a classic English still wine. It’s full of spring and great value for money.

Alois Lagader Riff Pinot Grigio
Made by one of the best producers in Italy from the north east part right near to the Austrian border. Great value for money.

Basa Blanco
Their next-door neighbour France make the classy stuff but Spanish wine is no pushover. Basa Blanc is a Spanish wine that smells a lot like a sauvignon Blanc but tastes like a Riesling. This is a really great alternative to a Sauvignon Blanc.

Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigar
This wine is made from a mixture of Grenache and malda. It is a great buy and has a clean, fresh and dry taste perfect for matching with summer time food.

Gaia Notios Red
This Greek wine is un-wooded and is fresh, light, soft and fruity. A perfect match for outdoor dining.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

There are four sizes of pizza six inches that costs between Rs 85 and Rs 140, nine inches at Rs 160-270, 12 inches for Rs 285-395, and the 14 inch mama mia at Rs 370-450. One use for the dips is to mop them up with the crusts, transforming an otherwise boring part of the pizza. Papa John really does have something for the whole family, including weight watchers. That’s where its USP lies.

HOT SNACKS

Red Mullet on Pea Purée with Beetroot Crisps
This main course is as much a delight on the eye as it is on the palate. It’s a deceptively simple dinner party dish that’s bound to impress your friends.

Gratin of Smoked Haddock with Toasted Brioche
Leeks, smoked haddock and Gruyere cheese are a match made in heaven. The sweetness of the brioche adds a delicious contrast and makes this a hearty treat.

Individual Steamed Puddings with Persimmon Anglaise
This treacle-laden pudding, laced with orange liquer and a hint of citrus is a smart twist on an unbeatable family favourite.
