Bash in the USA

The Asian American Coalition’s annual bash in Chicago was a big hit with the immigrant crowd and the event owed more than a little to the organisational skills of the local Punjabi community

More than 1,000 people attended the 23rd Annual Asian American Coalition of Chicago’s Lunar New Year Celebration on February 25, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, in Illinois. “The Indonesian American Community of Illinois hosted this star-studded event, chaired by Roosy Miller and co-chaired by Martino Tangkar. It was the first time the Indonesian community was hosting this event in Chicago, and it turned out perfect,” said Rajinder Singh Mago, member of the advisory council to the hosts, and who has co-chaired this event in 1995 and 2003 when the Indian American community was the host. The event included a gala dinner, traditional music and dance entertainment, celebrity TV personalities as programme emcees, an after-event dance, and of course primary elections politics all along.

Different Asian American communities take turns to be the main host and the rest cooperate in planning the event. Mr Leonard Louie on behalf of Chinese American community accepted the gavel as the Next year’s host.

“Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago, and Sikh American Heritage Organisation members have a two decade long history of participation in this event,” said Mohinderjit Singh Saini, member Zoning Board of Appeals, village of Palatine.

That fact was duly acknowledged. “Special thanks to the Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago for unselfish support and assistance! Moh Saini and Thakar Basati are indeed two treasures of our Asian American community,” said Liah Tehan.
