Myskina’s double as Russians sweep Sunfeast Open

Sania magic didn’t work at the WTA Sunfeast Open. Russian princess Anastasia Myskina completed a double, winning the singles and doubles crown thus shaking off an year long title jnix. It was a Cinderella story for Myskina who stormed the center court to win the singles title packing Croat challenge Karolina Sprem 6-2, 6-2 and then paired with Elena Likhovtseva to complete the Russian rout decimating the Indo-US pair of Shikha and Neha Uberoi 6-1, 6-0 in under an hour.
The singles crown, a glittering crystal trophy, gave Myskina her first title since Moscow 2004 and the first in second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour final this year after Stockholm. Myskina gained invaluable 120 points and $27,000 as she gobbled up Sprem in just an hour. “I really enjoyed the whole week. For me it is really special because it is my first title in over an year,” said Myskina after the singles match.

Cricket on a tricky wicket

Joining the ongoing Greg Chappell-Saurav Ganguly spat, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Sunday issued a show cause notice to Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh for his comments on the controversy.

JUST NOT CRICKET: Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and coach Greg Chappel fell out during the test series in Zimbabwe. After Ganguly's leak of dressing room talk, it was war out int the open.

Though the notice did not name Harbhajan, the cricket association asked that a ‘Punjab Player who is registered with PCA’ should explain why he made the statement.
‘He is being advised to meet PCA office bearers for discussions and appropriate remedial measures and put the things in the right perspective,’ the notice said.
Harbhajan, a known supporter of Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, had come out in his defence Sunday and said India’s new coach Greg Chappell was vitiating the team atmosphere.
Reacting to Harbhajan’s statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) advised all players under contract with it to refrain strictly from making any comments on the controversy.

Pakistan wants piece of hockey action

The Indian Hockey Federation is likely to give serious consideration to a Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) proposal to participate in an Asian Hockey League featuring itself, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Korea.
PHF Director Marketing Sardar Naveed Haider was quoted by The Nation as saying that he had floated the idea during a meeting with Ratan Basu, the Chief Executive Marketing of the IHF and representative of ESPN-Star Sports.
During the meeting, the officials of the two hockey federations also discussed the Pakistan and India series and the availability of Pakistan players for India’s Premier League Hockey scheduled for the second week of January 2006.

SPEED KING: Fernando Alonso became the new Formula One Champion after he finished No. 3 in the Brazilian Grand prix.

Alonso gets the chequered Flag

Juan Montoya won Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, but Fernando Alonso locked up the Formula One driver’s championship with a third-place finish. The No.10 McLaren of Montoya crossed the finish line 2.527 seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen.
Alonso’s third-place finish clinched the title and he became the youngest F1 champion in history. Alonso was already the youngest driver to win a race (22 years, 0 months, 26 days).
Action began right after the green flag dropped. Raikkonen wasted no time in climbing the charts, passing Giancarlo Fisichella for third place before the race reached turn four.

Meanwhile, both Williams race cars were knocked out of the race just barely past the starting grid.

Alonso’s pursuit of a historic championship got off to a good start as he beat Montoya to the first turn. Montoya, however, was going to be a force today and he passed Alonso for the lead on lap two. Of course, Alonso only needed a third place finish to lock up the driver’s championship. The next race is scheduled for Sunday, October 9, in Suzuka, Japan.
