Female NRI cabbie crusader wins Ford Foundation award
Indian-American Bhairavi Desai, who leads a diverse population of New York taxi drivers in their fight for fair treatment, has won the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World Award. Desai, 31, executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, is among 17 awardees chosen from a pool of 1,000 nominations. Each awardee receives $100,000 to advance their work and an additional $15,000 for educational opportunities to strengthen their individual or organisational effectiveness over the course of two years.
Asian American group to aid Pakistan quake victims
The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), whose membership was 99 per cent Indian American, is donating $20,000 towards relief efforts for the Oct 8 earthquake which struck Pakistan and parts of India and Afghanistan.
Manhar P. Rama, chairman of AAHOA said the organisation and its members “offer condolences to the families of the victims and the people and governments of India and Pakistan”.

NRI to promote $345 million township in Bengal

Kolkata-based Sunsam Properties has entered into an agreement with an NRI investor named Sat Pal Khattar based in Singapore for a Rs. 1,500 crore township project in Kolkata. The project will cover 100 acres. The builders have already approached the government for identifying land for the project. The project will be a 50:50 joint venture. 
It will have housing and an information technology park and smart homes to cater to the demands of the IT sector, NRIs, and the higher income group.

Harvard’s Univ’s new dean?

This might be another big story of India shining in the business academia. The person generating the biggest buzz in the hallowed portals of the Harvard B-School is Srikant Datar, an accounting professor at the esteemed institution. Datar is one of the frontrunners for what arguably is the Golden Boot of management education. Datar, an IIM-A alumnus, has worked with General Motors, Boeing, AT&T and has extensive research background in accounting and finance. He might just end Harvard’s search for a leader with a global outlook.
