“Our relations with India are enduring, and growing”

H.E. Ms Lesego Ethel Motsumi, High Commissioner of the Republic of Botswana to India, responds to a range of questions from India Empire Magazine’s Editor Sayantan Chakravarty...

Kindly give us an overview of tourism opportunities in Botswana, and if Indian tourism to your country is on the rise?

The number of India tourists travelling to Botswana has grown significantly each year. Botswana is a safari destination, providing Indians with a unique experience of seeing wildlife in their unpolluted habitat and has all the African Big 5 animals. Indian nationals need to apply for an entry visa before their travel to Botswana and why not start the process by visiting our Consular section at http://www.botswanahighcom.in/ for more information.

Indian investors can also participate in the tourism sector through projects such as infrastructure development such as constructing hotels and setting up hospitality and tourism institutes, restaurants, and as tour operators. Allied activities such as banking institutions, security services and transport provision are also possible areas for investment.

According to you, what is the role played by the Indian Diaspora in Botswana in strengthening bilateral ties?

The Indian Diaspora in Botswana plays an important role in the development of Botswana as well as strengthening ties between our two countries. They are ambassadors of Botswana as they travel between Botswana and India for whatever reason. Most of the Indian nationals in Botswana are members of society in good standing which gives Batswana the confidence to freely interact with them. At more than 10 000 strong, some of them are citizens of Botswana, many hold permanent residence status. They are historically an integral part of Botswana’s societal fabric and continue to influence the culture of Botswana, through food, music, business acumen, good work ethics, and through intermarriages.
